Hello, my name is Abigail Flores!
I' m currently a student at the University of Florida, located in Gainesville, Florida. I'm currently looking for a teacher in either Filipino (Tagalog) or Mandarin Chinese.
My reasons for seeking a language teacher are two-fold.
First, I am proud of my cultural heritage. Born and raised in the United States, I learned what I know of the Filipino culture from my parents. My mom has made brief mentions of Chinese heritage as well.. However, I feel disconnected whenever my parents engage in speaking in Tagalog. I want to actively embrace my culture by learning its language: Tagalog and Mandarin Chinese. It's my only way of talking to my grandparents, cousins and family friends. Plus, I also want to be able to pass this gft of languages to my kids, if I ever do have them.
Second, I am quite interested in languages themselves and the countries. I plan to hopefully visit both Philippines and China after I have completed my schooling.
I am a novice in both languages, having a minimum of a five word vocabulary. My parents had attempted to teach me Tagalog when I was younger but has since ceased. I have small exposure to Chinese.
I am willing to spend 2hours a week minimum during the school semester, and hopefully more hours during the summer (if you happen to available then as well).
Wha t I expect from my language teacher is what my language teacher can expect from me: someone who is hard-working and passionate about Tagalog and/or Mandarin Chinese. I learn better from live interaction either in one-on-one if not small group session. I hope to engage this teacher in lessons and conversations . I am looking for a knowledgeable teacher in one or both of languages I have ascribed, who is both creative and patient. Especially patient.

My brother (10) and I would like to learn Mandarin in order to better communicate with a large part of the world's population. We have no current knowledge of Mandarin, but we'd like to excel as far as we can. Since I am 18 and may learn faster, we may have to eventually split the lessons up, but at least in the beginning, we would like to take lessons together. Once a week lessons, for maybe an hour would be good; or whatever else is recommended by the teacher. Someone who is comfortable working with our age differences would be preferable and who could give us homework or materials to practice with.

I am interested in weekly private after school Chinese lessons at our home in San Diego (area code 92130) for my non-native 8 and 9 year old children . They have each had 2 years of weekly classes during the school year, but are still at an elementary level because we do not speak Chinese at home and they have very limited exposure. We would like to learn speaking, reading, and writing in traditional or simplified Chinese with pinyin but not zhuyin.
We need a teacher who is experienced at teaching children and making lessons fun to maintain student interest. However, my children need more than only playing games and singing songs. They have had this type of teaching for 2 years but still don't remember much. They will not learn without structured textbooks and homework (which I can help them with at a basic level). I expect them to make significant progress as a result of your lessons.

My son recently married a woman who was born and raised in Tai wan. My new daughter-in-l aw's brother is getting married this August in Taipei - and my wife and I are invited! I am interested in learning as much zhong wen as I am able in the short interval between now and the wedding. I work more than fulltime and am 60 years old - so I might be quite a challenge to teach! If you are still in Ithaca and you are continuing to tutor, would you be willing to take me on as a student? Please, let me know.
