Learning Chinese is easy, but teaching is not

Ten years ago, a native English speaker can easily find a teacher's job in China, but now is not the same case. People find the difference of qualities. Teaching a langauge is different from just speaking it. Many people view Chinese a difficult language, but actually,to learn Chinese is easy, but to teach it well, is not that easy. Because teaching Chinese is not only about fluent English and Chinese, it's more about lingusitics,the similarities and differences in languages, the evolution and grammar system of both languages, and transcultural communications. As Chinese is an old language, to explain the surfacial "comfusions" well to the westerners, one needs good academic preparation for traditional Chiense or critical intepretation of ancient texts. These are only at the layer of knowledge. How to convey it well in a class is totally another thing! And now, in the age of E-learning 2.0, the learning environment has greatly changed. Learning becomes easier,and more capacities are required for being a good teacher. |
