Amharic Software

by Shoangizaw Tegegne

I often get asked what software I use to type in Amharic.  I currently use the combination of 1) Keyman Desktop 7.1 and 2) Amharic (Ethiopian) keyboard and font power pack softwares which are both available at: http://www.tavultesoft.com/

There are, of course, a number of Amharic software products and vendors available online. Some are free, some are not. I tried about three other unsatisfactory products before. Either they did not have the complete set of all the Amharic letters or they were too complicated for me to use or figure out .  They were poorly documented, too. I withhold their names because I tested them more than a couple of years ago and I do not wish to damage their reputation with an old data. I only hope that they have improved and become more mature and viable products since then.

I did not look back since I downloaded the combination softwares I first above mentioned more than a year ago. I  have satisfactorily used it for all my Amharic typing needs and strongly recommends it to anyone who wanted an Amharic software.

What travultesoft does is produce a software called Keyman Desktop which is kind of an interface between the Window platform and the Amharic Keyboard which is separately developed.  As its website states: 'Keyman Desktop 7.1 makes typing in any language, including Amharic, easy in any Windows application. It is the perfect tool for anyone who needs to quickly switch between languages.'

It is a freeware--meaning you could dowload and test it for free for a month or so. If, however, you wanted to keep it fully functioning, after the trial period is over, you have to pay the licensing fee of I believe less than US$20 dollars. It is  very good value for the money and I strongly recommend it. Good luck!
