My name is Mary (韩 828;). I'm a 20-year-old student at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and I'm looking for a tutor to help me with Mandarin.
My motivation to learn is simply that I am half Chinese, though I never learned the language. I've been wanting to learn since I was 16, but never really got started until last year. I spent 7 months studying in Beijing from September 2009 to April 2010, so I'm not starting from zero, but I'm definitely on a beginner's level.
I'm looking for someone to meet with regularly-- twice a week perhaps, to help me learn, practice with me, and push me to study. I'm interested in every facet of the language- conversation, reading, writing, culture, and I'd like to start ASAP and to continue throughout the school year.

I am interested in learning to speak some basic Mandarin Chinese for personal use. I plan to travel on vacation to Taiwan and would like to be able to communicate on a very basic conversationa l level with a limited vocabulary of common, everyday expressions in Mandarin. I am a beginner with no proficiency in the Chinese language. An hour per week of one-to-one, in-person tutoring would be fine, and whether I would be able to afford more or less than that depends on the hourly tutoring rate of the instructor. Regarding qualities I would look for in my lessons and teacher, I have myself been a tutor of Russian language in the past, and currently tutor individuals to improve their English language writing skills, so I would like to have a language instructor who demonstrates a level of patience and good nature similar to what I have shown to my own 'students.'
