I am interested in learning Hindi because I plan to visit India in the near future, have had a long-time interest in Indian film, and I believe it is a beautiful language and a beautiful country.
I am a complete beginner in Hindi.
I would like to spend one or more days per week in lessons, and am willing to do a few hours of homework each week, minimum.
I 'm hoping to find a teacher that is proficient or a native speaker. One that can take me through, logically from the beginning. In a similar style to that taught at universities or high school, not in a conversationa l/memorization manner.

I want to learn Hindi out of love for the language. A good number of my friends and family consider Hindi their mothertongue, so I have been exposed to it for a very long time.
My proficiency is very low. So many words are familiar to me because I hear them so often, but even basic sentences I would have a very difficult time forming them. I have a basic grasp on the grammar and when someone is talking I can kind of follow along and get an idea what they are talking about. And of course I know basic things... ap ka nam kya hai?? mera nam (my name) hai. ap kaise hai? you know, things like this. I also can read/write Hindi alphabet and want to get stronger at this so would prefer to have books in Hindi rather than transliterate d to English. Also one thing I very much struggle with is the issue of gender in Hindi grammer. English is so devoid of this for the most part and so it is very difficult for me.
I am willing to spend whatever amount of time it takes to learn Hindi, as it is one of my life dreams. My biggest problem is that I'm very shy and get hesitant to try and talk Hindi because a lot of friends pick fun at me when I try, so I really hope to find a teacher who won't poke fun and will be understanding of me having a funny accent and being a beginner.

I am writing this in search of a teacher who is interested in teaching group classes to elementary school kids - in particular my 6.5 y.o daughter & others. She took a small group class when she was 4.5 to 5.5 y.o for about a year from a native Hindi speaker who ultimately returned to India. She is expressing an interest again, but all the schools and classes are in the South Bay and are too far to travel - even once per week. My husband is of Indian descent, but does not speak Hindi fluently. We are hoping to find a teacher who lives in the Oakland/Berke ley/El Cerrito area or close to these cities & to do this one time per week - most likely weekends.
