I plan on majoring in Linguistics. Currently I am Taking a begginners course in german, and through my martial arts instructor I am learning a bit of cantonese. Next year I plan to China, and in the future I plan on visiting many other counrties. I mainly would like to learn arabic for my own personel reasons (if your thinking terrorism you are absolutly wrong). If there are any teachers out there willing to help I will greatly appreciate it.

Beginner. I want to spend two weeks in Hong Kong or Guang zhou learning Cantonese in an intensive program. I will be in Hong Kong January 20th, and can stay 15 days.

I'm Chinese-Ameri can whose family speaks Cantonese. Most of my family, including my mother, knows how to speak both English and Cantonese. However, others, such as my father, my grandmother, and my boyfriend's family, mainly speak Cantonese. There are two major reasons why I want to learn conversationa l Chinese.
1. I want to be able to speak to family members in Cantonese, especially my father.
2. I'll be changing jobs this summer and will need to brush up on my Cantonese since there's a real need for it in my company.
I only have 6 months left in DC before I move back to Boston for the new job. I want to devote my free time during the weekdays and some weekends to learning conversationa l Cantonese. However, I'm a full-time teacher and a part-time graduate student, so I'm interested in taking classes after 3:30pm on certain days. I don't have a car, so classes will need to be Metro accessible.

I am getting married very soon to a wonderful man who is Chinese. He and his family came here from Hong Kong thirty years ago. While my fiance has become very Westernized, his parents still follow many of their country's and religion's customs; and, of course, they still speak Chinese---alo ng with some very broken English.
During gatherings and holiday events with the family, communication is a struggle, to say the least. Eventually, after a few minutes, they all fall into speaking their own language, and I am left sitting for hours not knowing what anyone is saying! My fiance translates as much as is practical, but you can imagine how frustrating this is for me!
I would like to be able to honor and communicate with my future in-laws. I could attempt to learn from books or tapes, but I find that I learn much better with a live teacher. I would need someone who is patient, as I am thirty-six years old, and do not learn as quickly as I used to!
