I am going to take Beginning level Chinese (Mandarin) at college this fall, and I would like to get a head-start on learning it over the summer. My proficiency level in Mandarin is that of an absolute beginner.
I've done some research about the structure of the language (i.e. its four tones, and the nature of Chinese characters), and I've been told that my pronunciation is very good, but other than that I am a novice.
The main purpose of my study this summer is to gain basic conversationa l skills in Mandarin, and to strengthen my pronunciation . I have books and a CD set to study from at home, but they cannot provide interactive conversationa l skills.
I am learning Mandarin Chinese due to: a genuine interest in Chinese culture and history, a desire to speak in Chinese with my Chinese friends, and also the realization that it is a good investment, as China's geo-political influence continues to grow.
I would like to meet for lessons once per week (or possibly twice if I can afford it). I am a motivated, respectful student who gets along well with people and has a good sense of humor.
I am seeking a teacher who is good at explaining things in a simple manner, who is familiar with the difficulties that English-speak ers have with learning Chinese, and who is passionate about teaching Chinese.
