I really can't speak much Japanese at all.
I know bits and pieces, but definitely not enough to carry out a conversation.
This brings us to why I want to learn Japanese.
My first and foremost reason is that I am half Japanese.
Gr owing up, I was never really taught how to speak Japanese.
Al l of my life I really wanted to though, but never found the time to do so. I took Spanish in highschool, and excelled at that, but I knew that I would never really get serious about it. Japanese on the other hand I would take seriously because it would enable me to defeat the language barrier between my Obachan and I. My Obachan will talk to me in Japanese even though I don't always understand what she's saying, but she's the sweetest little old lady. My mom usually acts as the 'translator' to say the least.
I would like to read and write in Japanese. I would dedicate the ammount of time that the teacher suggests I suppose. I am a very dedicated learner, especially if it's something of interest.
Qualities that I am looking for in a teacher would be a person who is patient, humble, and knows what they are doing. Some form of a teaching degree would be nice.

I am brand new to this. I have a dictionary, learning book, and cd's to learn Japanese, but it's not the same as learning in person. I learn pretty quickly, but I know this will take a long time. I want to learn Japanese, because I am entranced in Japanese culture, and I would someday like to visit Japan, if not move there. I need improvement in all areas, because I only know a few words. I'd like to spend 1 to 2 hours a day on lessons, with homework given, if possible. I'm looking for a good natured teacher, who is kind, but strict, so that they make sure I get my work done. Someone who is easy to get along with. I'm pretty easy going, so I can get along with almost anyone.
