I am staying at Melbourne on business travel and will spend the next 2.5 months here. During this period of time I would like to acquire basic Japanese language skills in the fastest possible fashion. While I would like to be able to perform basic reading (eg. to understand advertisement s, product labels, road signs, etc), my main focus is to acquire conversationa l skills with Japanese people in an informal settings (eg. talking to a Japanese friend while having dinner together).
I do not have any prior Japanese language experience. I am ethnically Chinese (although I wasn't born and did not grow up in China) and can read/write Chinese characters, hopefully it helps a bit with Kanji.
I would like to understand:
1. If it is possible for me to acquire basic Japanese language skills as described above within 2.5 months? Please do not hesitate to point out if this is too ambitious.
2. How many (and frequently) courses are needed for such compressed/ex pressed lessons? I am assuming that I will eed to commit 3 x 1 hour lessons each week (or 2 hour lessons) in order for me to acquire the language skills within short period of time.

After a couple of months after i passed the JLPT 3, I have to stop studying Japanese because i have to move here in Dubai. I still want to contiue studying Japanese and plan to take the JLPT 2 in December 2009. I find Japanese language very interesting.

I have very basic knowledge of the Japanese language, meaning that I have a few words and phrases memorized. i have always had an interest in Japanese culture and I plan to travel to Japan soon so I wish to have a grip on the language before I go. I will put as much time and effort into this as necessary or however much my instructor is willing to give. I am looking for good lessons with a nice instructor who makes it a fun experience.
