I am near total beginner wishing to learn mandarin for a volunteer work trip in october in Xian. I particular like the organisation because it recognises that it is an exchange.
I wish to have as best a conversationa l mandarin as possible before my trip, as yet I don't know why i will be doing so my needs may change as time goes on.

Hi,
I'm Stephen, I'm 27 and have just returned from Taiwan where I was living, teaching English, and studying conversationa l Chinese. I plan to go back sometime and want to continue learning Chinese.
I 'd say I'm an elementary level student. My listening isn't bad, but my tones are poor and it takes me a long time for grammar rules to sink in (although I do usually 'get it' eventually). To give you an idea of my grammar level, the last point I studied was how to use 'guo4' to talk about past experiences, e.g. 'Wo3 qu4 guo4 Tai2wan1 (I have been to Taiwan)' (sorry I can't write Chinese, hope you can read pinyin!) I have a textbook from my language school in Taiwan that I would prefer to continue using as a base.
I have never seriously studied reading/writi ng, I only recently started self-study, I know approximately 300 (traditional) characters and will continue to study this privately.
I want to know how expensive 1-1 classes are per hour. I would like to study for 2 hours a week (1 day a week, in the evening) if possible, and I guess I will study on my own around 10 hours a week - I'm quite studious. I only want to practise speaking/list ening during classes and need a teacher who will be strict on tones and patient with me, particularly regarding new grammar. Patience, strictness and a sense of humour are the most important personality traits I want in my teacher. Knowledge of pinyin or bopomofo would be a big help to me.
I DON'T want a teacher who will speak English during lessons unless absolutely necessary (this was a problem for me with a previous teacher).

I have no experiance in Mandarin.
I am going to start a job in China in Febuary and would like to learn Mandarin full time for 3 months before going.
I would liek to be able to get a grounding in teh language particularly with use of everyday langauge such as small talk as well as ordering food wtc as well as simply being polite.
I will dedicate at least 30 hours a week to learning the langauge.
