I became interested in Japanese whilst assisting with a summer school for Japanese university students in the summer of 2004. Having got to know a number of the students during the course I began to teach myself Japanese using self-teach books and cassettes. Having kept in touch with many of the students I met in 2004 I have now visited Japan a number of times travelling to various parts of the country including Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hokkaido.
My interest in Japanese language and culture has developed significantly since 2004 and I have spent two summers in Tokyo at a language school in order to improve my spoken and written Japanese.
At the moment I am reasonably proficient in conversationa l Japanese. I have learnt both hiragana and katakana but my knowledge of Kanji needs much more work. My speaking skills are at an intermediate level, although my reading and writing skills are still only at the beginner level.
I currently work as a lawyer for a firm in London. I would like to improve my spoken (particularly keigo) and written Japanese so that I can communicate more effectively with my own friends in Japan but, most importantly, so that I can use my language skills as part of my job. A number of opportunities have arisen at work to use my Japanese but my lack of skills (particularly in reading, writing and use of formal Japanese) has been something of barrier.
U nfortunately, since I started full time work it has been more difficult to improve my Japanese through self-teaching , largely due to time constraints. I feel that proper tuition is now the only way to really progress. I would like to find a teacher who is willing to give one-to-one tuition (for an hour or two per week - ideally on weekends) so that I can continue to improve my speaking, writing and reading skills.
