I might consider myself an intermediate speaker. I studied Portuguese in Brazil for a month in college, 101 and 102. I am proficient in Italian and Spanish, which helps me to understand spoken Portuguese. Because of this, my grammar is pretty decent, but my vocabulary is lacking. I am a little rusty, but am a very fast learner when it comes to languages. I love Brazil and have been twice, and hope to go again this summer to visit friends and do volunteer work. I want to learn it purely for conversationa l and travel purposes. I love languages and have studied linguistics and would love to be better at portuguese, but cannot take classes on a regular basis due to my work schedule and being out of town often. Therefore meeting might be 3 times a week for a week or two, then not at all for another week or two.

My primary language is English, however both of my parents are portuguese (acores). I think I'm probably at a begginer level, I really suck at it. I would like to be able to speak with relatives and understand them.1-2 lessons a week would probably work for me at first, while I decide if this is something i can actually do. I'd like to learn portuguese but i'm not crazy about the dialect of the islands? However I'm willing to learn either.

My husband and I have been learning European Portuguese at an adult education centre for three years, and have achieved a very basic level of competence, as we found the courses too short with very long gaps in between. The course is no longer running due to lack of student numbers. We hope to retire in about three years time, and would then like to live in Portugal. We would like to achieve a good standard of everyday conversation, with an ability to understand some Portuguese TV and read local newspapers. We would like to spend about 2 hours a week having lessons, and have some additional study work set to complete at home each week. We do not want a Brazilian teacher, as we had one for one term and found this very confusing.
