Instructional Philosophy
Although I have high expectations of students, I take a kind and patient approach. Language learning is hard, time-consumin g work. The best way for students to be successful is through long term commitment to their goals with a teacher who knows their strengths and weaknesses and who can develop good strategies that meet the needs of each individual student.
My academic orientation is constructivis t. I believe that students must construct meaning for themselves, however, I see a lot of good in Chinese approaches to learning and education. That said, both of my children - now young adults - learned Chinese in traditional Chinese educational settings, and I think that in this age of technology, we have tools available to make instruction understandabl e. Students will not come away saying, "I don't know what the teacher was talking about in class today."
