I am residing in France from September 2005 and still can't speak French. The problem is, when someone speaks French I can not understand a word. My courses are in English and all my Friends are from outside France. I can read and write to some extent but can not understand very well.

My proficiency level is beginner to intermediate, and I am learning French for a couple of reasons. First of all, I have a home in Ottawa and will be returning there in September. The job position I'm applying for there requires a working knowledge of French. Also, my girlfriend is Mexican and speaks Spanish and French fluently, but English only as a third language. Thus, for the sake of good communication and a healthy relationship it is important for me to learn one of her languages.
Particular improvement is needed in conversation as this is primary for my job and relationship.
I am willing to dedicate a few evenings a week to this, but am flexible.
Qualities I am looking for in a teacher are dedication and clarity.
