I want to learn Latvian because I love the culture, and want to get a head start on learning it so I might be more likely to get a scholarship to go to Latvia as an exchange student in 2012 and 2013.
I am nearly a complete beginner, only knowing basic information like language history, alphabet, etc., which I would need to review.
I need most help on pronunciation , mostly with the long vowels.
I am interested in working with a small group of friends (who know less than me, and have a hobbyist interest), and want to devote an hour or so per week with the group, maybe more privately if I have time and money.
I am looking for a teacher who would be inexpensive, and a native speaker. Preferably with good English, simply because of translation issues that could arise.

My father is Russian, but was born and raised in Yugoslavia. I spoke Serbian as a small child but my relations with my father were severed and I've forgotten most of the Serbian I spoke as a child. I would like to learn Russian for personal reasons but also because I love learning new languages. I can also speak fluent German.
I am taking a hiatus from the University at the moment and it's proven to be extremely torturous for me. I love to learn and I thought with this time off I could finally learn to speak Russian and give my Babushka a surprise.
