I have just finished a Masters degree in Scotland and I am coming to the end of a two month stay in Harbin, China. During this time I have picked up only minimal mandarin as learning the language was not the goal of my visit.
However, my visit has been enough to spark a real interest. When I return home I will begin a phd based in Leeds. eventually I would like to return to China for further travel/work as I have enjoyed my stay here.
I would like to learn a second language and I feel Mandarin would be an interesting and challenging choice.
I am looking for a friendly teacher who speaks standard Chinese. I think around 2 hours of lessons a week would be managable however, it would be ideal if a teacher was able to be flexible in terms of a changing schedule.
I would like to learn written chinese as well as conversation and grammer.

I'm looking to learn Japanese for no other reason than self improvement. I can currently speak only English and a little German and think that knowing another language can only be a benefit. I'm looking to spend 1-2 hours a week with a tutor and then whatever time is necessary in my spare time. I can travel to my tutor or I am happy for them to come to my house.
