I just recently retired from the US Navy and my last duty station introduced me to the Ethiopian population. I was very impressed with the new friends I made. The culture, history, and people are very interesting to me and I want to further educate myself in the Ahmaric language for future visits to Ethiopia and/or a move to the DC area where the Ethiopian population is generalized. I fell in love with the culture such as the foods, bunna, and people. I have made lifelong friends and I want to keep those friends and learning the language will help to bridge the gap between Americans and our Ethiopian brothers and sisters.

I have adopted three children from China, and my youngest, age 2.5, speaks Mandarin quite well. I would like for him and his older siblings to become proficient in Mandarin. I'm a relatively recent college graduate who took about two and a half years of Russian classes at Rice University. I also spent a semester in St. Petersburg, where I further developed my speaking, reading, and writing skills. But this was two years ago and I feel as though I've forgotten everything I learned. I don't have any particular reason for wishing to continue with Russian, except that I really enjoyed learning the language. I also intend to eventually pursue a Master's/PhD in Comparative Literature, which necessitates a proficient degree of knowledge in at least two languages other the English, so I'd like to focus especially on reading, writing, and grammar. I do think, however, that my speaking skills are the weakest. Ideally, I want a teacher who is patient and understanding , has a robust sense of humor, and is not afraid to push his or her pupils to the highest level of their abilities. I would ideally like to dedicate 2-3 hours a week of instruction. I work from 9-5 Mon-Fri, so I am free all evenings and anytime weekends.

There are a few reasons I am learning Mandarin: First of all, very simply it is something I am naturally interested in. The more I learn, the more I enjoy and want to learn it. Secondly, I am in the process of joining the military and the field I plan on entering is linguistics, so I would like to have a jump start going into it. Currently, I would describe my level as a fairly low level beginner. I have lessons on an IPOD of mine, and listen to them whenever I have a chance. I would like to learn and converse with somebody familiar with Mandarin once or twice a week for an hour or so in addition to listening to the lessons. I work Monday through Friday until 3, so the evenings are better for me; the weekends are good for me as well. I am looking for a knowledgable instruction who is friendly and somewhat patient. Thanks
