RUSSIAN 🇷🇺 GRAMMAR NOTE 🤓☝️📝 ✨Russian way to say «I have»✨

by Oxana Novikova

If you want to say in Russian «I have …» you should use the phrase «У меНЯ есть …»: I have … → У меНЯ есть … You have … → У теБЯ есть … He has … → У неГО есть … She has … → У неЁ есть … We have … → У нас есть … You have … → У вас есть … They have … → У них есть … But this is not a literal translation. These constructions have different logic. Compare: I (Subject) 👩🏼‍🦰 have 🤗 a mobile phone 📱(object). ↔ У меНЯ ➡️👩🏼‍🦰 есть 🤗 моБИльник (subject) 📱 In Russian language «есть» is an archaic form of the verb to be in the Present tense, to be more precise the only remaining one of its former system of forms. This form is literally translated into English as «there is» / «there are» and is used only in this construction. «У меНЯ ➡️👩🏼‍🦰 есть 🤗 моБИльник 📱 » is literally translated into English as «There is 🤗 a mobile phone 📱 AT me ➡️ 👩🏼‍🦰». Pay attention that the Russian phrase «у меНЯ» has a broader and more universal meaning than its English equivalent. In this construction «у меНЯ» means ➡️✨«in my life»✨, ➡️✨«in the space of my life». The verb “to have” is translated into Russian as «иМЕть» but the literal translation of the English sentence «I 👩🏼‍🦰 have 🤗 a mobile phone 📱 » (→ «Я 👩🏼‍🦰 иМЕю 🤗 моБИльник 📲 ») doesn't sound natural. Overall, the verb «иМЕть» is more frequent in the official style. And one more interesting nuance! 😲☝️ И ещё оДИН интеРЕсный нюанс! If you want to say «in my handbag 👩🏼‍🦰👜» (For example, «There is a mobile phone 📱 in my handbag 👩🏼‍🦰👜 »), in Russian instead of the English possessive pronoun «my» there will be the construction «у меНЯ». MODEL: « У меня ➡️👩🏼‍🦰 в СУмке 👜 есть моБИльник 📱». ✨✨✨ У нас ➡️ в ГОроде 🌇 есть 🤗 банк 🏦. There is a bank 🏦 in our town 🌇. ✨✨✨ У них ➡️ в ГОроде 🌇 есть 🤗 больНИца 🏥👩🏻‍⚕️👨🏼‍⚕️. There is a hospital in their town. ✨✨✨ У них ➡️ в Офисе есть🤗 компьЮтер 🖥. There is a computer 🖥 in their office. ✨✨✨ ATTENTION 🤓☝️ This change is typical for the Russian language in answer to the question «Где?» - “Where?” Где? – У нас ➡️ в семье 👨‍👩‍👧 In our family 👨‍👩‍👧 Compare: Где? – У неё ➡️ 👱🏼‍♀️в СУмке 👜 ( = in her 👱🏼‍♀️ handbag 👜) Где? – У них ➡️👫 в ГОроде 🌇 ( = in their 👫town / city 🌇) Где? – У теБЯ ➡️ 👨на раБОте 👨‍💻 ( = at your 👨work 👨‍💻) Где? – У меНЯ ➡️👩🏼‍🦰 дома 🏡 ( = at my 👩🏼‍🦰 home 🏡 ) Где? – У него ➡️🧑🏻‍🦱в телеФОне ( = in his 🧑🏻‍🦱phone 📲 ) Где? – У нас ➡️ 👩🏼‍🦰👱🏼‍♂️в МанЧЕстере 🌇 ( = in our city / in Volgograd) Pay attention, that the construction «У нас ➡️👩🏼‍🦰👱🏼‍♂️ в МанЧЕстере 🌇» is used, if the speaker (or the speakers) live(s) in Manchester and see(s) this city as his / their home. ✨✨✨ MODEL: У меНЯ ➡️👩🏼‍🦰 в СУмке 👜 есть 🤗 моБИльник 📱, ПАспорт 🇷🇺, заРЯдка 🔌, клюЧИ (от ДОма 🏡 🔑, от маШИны 🚘 🗝), ФЛЕшка, кошеЛЁК 👛, МАска 😷 и ... 🤪 ещё миллиОН веЩЕЙ. I 👩🏼‍🦰 have 🤗 a mobile phone 📱, a passport 🇷🇺, a charger 🔌, keys ( to the house 🏡 🔑 , to the car 🚘 🗝), a memory stick, a purse 👛 , a face mask 😷 and ... 🙈 a million other things in my handbag 👩🏼‍🦰👜 . ✨✨✨ What do you have in your handbag 👜 / in your rucksack 🎒? Что есть у вас в СУмке 👜 / у вас в рюкзаКЕ 🎒? Write ✍️ in comments. НапиШИте ✍️ в комменТАриях.🙈
