Learning english-Parts of speech

Nouns-contd        

Multiple possessive nouns-This term is used when you have more than one noun possessing the same thing
            Example - Ram's and Prem's shoes are very dirty
                             John,s and Charley's trips were fun.
To make a singular noun possessive just add the letter  'S    -Example-The cat's tail
To make plural noun possessive add an  apostrophe  to the last letter of the plural noun if it end with an S-                                                                                                  Example-The boys'  book bags
If the last letter of the plural noun is not  S  ,add  'S to such word                                                                                          Eample-men - The men's shoes
 
 
Functions of nouns in sentences
Subject - Direct object  -Indirect object  -Predicate-Appositive-objects of prepositions
 
Subject- it indicates who and what is performing the action of the Verband can also come after a linking Verb
              Example - The student cried hysterically
                               Our teacher is very nice
Direct object -It follows the verb and it indicates who and what receives the action of the verb
               Example - Johnson locked the gate of the school
                                Wilson caught a fish
Indirect object-it indicates to whom or for whom something is done or given..
                To identify the indirect object you may imagine that the word  to  or  for  is in front of the indirect objec
                 The following  VERBS are usually followed by indirect objects
                                   give, buy, save, bake , take ,send, pay etc
                  Example-The customers paid the cashier the money
Predicatee noun- it comes after the verb to be and can also come after a linking verb
                  Example - My daughter is the funniest kid in the school
                                   Johnson will become the CEO of the company
Appositive-it is a word or phrase   explains or gives information about another word
                   Example- Colombo,  the capital of Sri Lanka ,is a developed city
Objects of prepositions
A preposition is s word that shows location-movement-direction .It shows the relation between anoun/pronoun and another noun/pronoun       
i.e - in, on, with, by, for, under
Example - The pencil is on the table  .
