    Teaching Approach

I'll take you through all of the sounds of American English, one at a time, and teach you to recognize and produce each one. Then I will teach you about American English intonation and cadence. This is the 'music' and the 'rhythm' of American English. Then we go through all of the various ways to practice, sound drills, conversation, reading, etc., until you are satisfied with your new American accent.

I use an on-line "virtual whiteboard". This has all of my materials on it that we can both see and write on.

I use a pronunciation practice website where you will see video of me producing sounds, words, and phrases, then you will repeat into a recorder. You can re-record as often as you want to. When you think you have a good recording, send it in to me for review and comment.

    Program Description

    Please note:
    * I only do English pronunciation and accent reduction.
    * I only work over the internet.
    * $40 per 55 minute session

I' m a really good teacher. I have over twelve years of experience teaching students at all levels from all over the world.

    ACCENT REDUCTION SPECIALIST
U nlike most ESL teachers, I hold a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics (UT Arlington, 1995). In other words, I have the training to help my students with their accent and pronunciation . Check out the reviews in my profile. I have helped many students reduce their accents. That is the first step to being understood.

    I can:
    • Show you how to control those sounds that are hard to make and hear. (I mean, all of our mouths are made the same, right?)
    • Teach you American English intonation, cadence, etc.
    • And teach you American English word structure: syllable stress/accent , syllable types, etc.

    FULLY ONLINE
I am set-up to take advantage of all that the internet has to offer. We work over Skype. This allows for lip-reading at a comfortable distance. I have my material on an on-line whiteboard, at iDroo.com, that we can both see and write on. We do our pronunciation homework over Extempore.com . The homework will keep you busy learning outside of class so that you will advance more quickly without spending as much money.

    LEA RNER CENTERED
My teaching style is learner-cente red and learner directed. This means that each session is for you and not for me. My lesson plan is always flexible. If you want to drill sounds for an hour, I will be patient. If you want to lighten up and have a relaxed conversation, I will accommodate. If you want something in-between, just let me know!

    SAFE AND RELAXED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
At the various schools where I have taught, I've always achieved high marks in building student rapport and setting the right environment for learning.

    Teaching Experience

After finishing graduate school, I spent two years teaching ESL for the Dallas County Community Colleges.

Then I spent 13 months in Portugal learning my own second language.

After I learned Portuguese, I spent six years in Mozambique, Africa working as a Field Linguist for SIL International . I was assigned to work among the speakers of Lolo, which is a minority language indigenous to Mozambique. This language had no alphabet—noth ing had ever been written in Lolo before.

I went in, listened to their language, learned their sound system, wrote them an alphabet, and started teaching them to read and write their own language. Then I chose some of their brightest—tra ining them to translate from Portuguese into Lolo.

After that, I returned to teaching ESL, amassing another eight years of ESL experience teaching English to students of all levels from all over the world. My teaching has sent me to The United States, Egypt, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, and Afghanistan.

I am trained to prepare students for oral examinations. I am skilled at teaching American English pronunciation .

    Teacher Training

I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy (Seattle Pacific University, 1990) and a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics (University of Texas at Arlington, 1995) during which I received training in phonetics and phonology. I earned all A’s in these courses; they were my favorite!
