Emphasis on spoken language: I equally address five domains of language acquisition with my students - listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. The ultimate goal is to be confident in speaking without relying heavily on the written text.
Respect silent period: I explain to my students that they are not expected to start speaking immediately but instead should develop listening comprehension to be able to produce sounds correctly.

Teaching Experience

The most relevant examples that demonstrate my experience in planning and implementing significant second language programs are in curriculum design and material development for a Russian and French program.
In 2009, inspired by student interest in learning Russian language and culture, I organized the Russian Language Club at Ramstein High School with the goal to introduce the basics of the Russian culture. The program was comprised of 50 lessons with emphasis on listening comprehension as the optimal approach within the club setting and encompassed the theory of silent period for the beginners. To enrich the learning with meaningful real-life experiences, I facilitated a trip to Russia for the club members, including fund-raising events. I evaluated the success of the program informally as an extracurricul ar activity mainly by students’ enthusiasm levels, which were high.
The most recent experience in designing curriculum and developing materials for a language program is my student-teach ing of French as a world language in a US Department of Defense Dependents School in Germany. I was responsible for developing instructional units and assessments aligned with the national and district standards for levels one through four. Integrating technology in instruction was one of principal objectives because the school participates in a pilot project providing each student with an individual laptop. I administered summative assessments based on the unit goals and objectives to evaluate the program effectiveness and found it to be successful. Long-term effects are evident as well from the post-assessme nt survey that revealed a larger number of students who decided to pursue studying French after the completion of my student-teach ing.
I believe that my success in the world languages instruction is directly correlated to my experiences as a lifelong learner of languages, particularly English, in academic and professional environment.
