    Teaching Approach

It is my belief that students who are interested in learning the Spanish language should be encouraged to get in touch with it. They can have an incredibly tangible experience with the language through the many facets of the Hispanic culture. For that reason it has been my purpose to introduce as much of my culture as possible when I teach. I use every resource available to me, whether it be literature, film or music, in order to hold the imaginations of my students and to facilitate their learning. In addition to speeding up the process of language acquisition, learning the culture and customs unique to Latin American and Spanish societies helps the student broaden their spectrums and become more comfortable and familiar with different perspectives and ways of living.

L iterature, being a form of fiction that narrates with words the events of our history and the political and social matters of the time, should be of particular interest for students and the undergraduate and graduate level. It is through literature that the student can familiarize himself with grammatical forms and how the language appears on the page. Film is another form of fiction, this time representing history, politics and society visually. Culture is demonstrated well in literature and film alike, as one can identify with characters and begin to understand sentiments and traditions which were possibly alien previously. Finally, music is an excellent representativ e for Hispanic culture because it demonstrates the happiness of our people and how this form of art aids in keeping our countries together.

The role of instructor in a Spanish language class, as in any language class, is primarily as a facilitator. Learning language is an accumulation of activities, each geared to bring familiarity and assuredness to the student. He or she must feel secure in their learning environment with regards to the curriculum, the pace of the class and the level at which they are learning. The instructor must be in tune with all of these areas for the student to achieve success.
