I organize lessons into themes in order to facilitate more effective learning strategies. I extensively use language-rela ted activities and various media outlets to construct lesson plans. Constant repetition is a must.

Lessons are centered around learning conversationa l Mandarin through chunk learning activities, written assignments, and vocabulary mastery.

Teaching Experience
|
|
|
I currently teach and tutor basic Mandarin to K-5 learners through Hamilton College's Language Practicum Program three times weekly. I have been working with this program for one year.
From May 2009-Septembe r 2009 I worked in Yantai, China with the World Exchange College of Languages as an English teacher to Chinese high school students, and as a private Mandarin tutor for American adults affiliated with the program. I also served as the program's primary Mandarin interpreter.

Teacher Training

While at Hamilton College I majored in Mandarin Chinese language. For completion of this major, I attended a 9 month long intensive language program (Associated Colleges of China) in Beijing, China. During this program I was required by language pledge to speak only Mandarin for the duration of my time in Beijing. Including the Beijing program, I have taken over 20 Mandarin language classes including culture and politics classes taught in Mandarin by native speakers. I completed my thesis in Mandarin on China's migrant population and current problems facing this specific population.
In the summer of 2009 I returned to China to teach English with the World Exchange College of Languages and to conduct research for future studies on Chinese rural governance.
I have certified proficiency in Mandarin at level 5 of the HSK examination, taken while in China. Level 5 fluency is equivalent to graduate level fluency in the language.

My teaching schedule varies according to student availability. I prefer to tutor on weekends.
I am willing to discuss payment policy with student and/or student's parents upon meeting.
I am extremely knowledgeable of Chinese cultural and political affairs, and therefore I am able to bring a cultural aspect to the table during tutoring. Students will not only gain language knowledge but also knowledge relevant to various aspects of Chinese society.
