Teaching Approach

Study of a language should not be approached as a difficult or tedious task. Learning Russian will take much time and effort, but it can be a fun experience if both the teacher and the learner are able to go beyond the idea that the language is "foreign." I start out by telling my students that Russian is neither more nor less difficult to learn than any other language. Believe it or not, even grammar is fun! I try to help my students feel confident in their learning abilities. For those who wish to go beyond the beginning level, I can help to arrange for study in Russia with experienced native instructors.

I am trained as a teacher of Russian at the university level, but am also experienced at teaching children. In addition to giving attention to grammar, pronunciation , reading, writing and conversation skills, I like to include the study of culture in my lessons.

Teaching Experience

|
I have taught Russian at the University of Washington on and off since 1979. I have also taught the language at Phillips Academy, Andover, MA, and as a volunteer in the Seattle Public Schools.

Teacher Training
|
|
|
My B.A. is in Slavic Languages and Literatures. I received my M.A. in Russian Area Studies (including literature, history and political science). I have been travelling regularly to Russia since 1976.
