Teaching Approach

I use my voice very sparingly in my ASL classes. If students hear everything spoken while their teacher is signing, they tend to focus on what they hear rather than what they see. I use simultaneous communication (signing and speaking at the same time) before and after the formal class or tutoring time to answer students' questions.

Program Description

My teaching style is focused, fun, and flexible. I operate under the assumption that language acquisition is best achieved in a natural manner; people best learn a new language in the way they learned their native language: by hearing (seeing) it spoken (signed).

Teaching Experience

I taught American Sign Language (ASL) for seven years at a community college. I also directed a "Signing Choir" for ten years, and currently tutor individual students at my home studio. For two years, I taught at the Gallaudet University Child Development Center.

Teacher Training

I have a B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Maryland. I took all available ASL classes at Prince George's Community College and at Gallaudet University. I studied with a private tutor at DeafPride in Washington, D.C.

Frequently Asked Questions

I recommend lessons twice a week at the outset; it is difficult for a beginning signer to achieve a sense of continuity studying only once a week. (I am willing to conduct classes once a week if the students cannot afford the ideal twice per week.)

Pay ment is expected by check or cash at the time the lesson is given for tutored students. For classes, payment is made in advance for an eight-week period.

I use the Vista American Sign Language "Signing Naturally" Series texts in my classes.

Cost of Lessons

I charge $30 per hour at my home studio and $40 per hour at students' homes.
