I want to learn French for two purposes: 1) to be proficient in speaking to sustain professional conversations (I am an economist) with colleagues in office and with clients (often government officers); and 2) to be proficient to conduct day-to-day personal life (shopping, talking to maid, in restaurants, making friends, etc.) in Mauritius and some other French speaking African islands.
I n the past I attempted to learn French attending Alliance Francaise school for two years some fifteen years ago. I found myself progressing well, as I was taken in at level II (I had learned bits of French in secondary school) and easily progressed up to level IV always top of the class. I gave up because although I was good in class I had no conversation opportunities outside class and this was frustrating.
Now that I have the opportunity to have conversations in French in Mauritius,I find that I am blocked as I lost some of the grammar and pronunciation I had gained, and also I have grown shy of making gross mistakes with office colleagues and government officers. I will therefore want a teacher to work intensively on my French grammar and conversation. Vocabulary and pronounciatio n are therefore very important. I don't have to write in French so writing skills are not as much of a priority.
I always wanted to learn French for both its beauty and professional usefulness to me, so I have a burning interest and have tended to be an easy learner. The biggest handicap has been the lack of opportunities to practice, and I believe I can finally do it as I will be living in Mauritius for at least the next 18 months.
I plan to take regular intensive lessons for the next six months, starting soonest. During this period, I will be able to be in country to take the lessons at least two weeks every month, as I will have to travel for the rest of the time for professional reasons.
I t would be most suitable if I could find a tutor arounf the Grand Bay area where I live, in Mauritius.
