Hello, I was born in Toronto, Canada to two Cantonese and English-speak ing parents. I am interested in learning Mandarin because I feel that it would be an asset once I get older and find a job potentially overseas. Currently I'm still a university student (3rd year) and am hoping to pick up some of the language before I go abroad and travel and study my Master's. I am also hoping to get a job in Hong Kong next year which would require a little use of Mandarin.
I understand and know how to write and read basic Chinese, so the written aspect is not too much of a concern for me. I am however, looking for more instruction on the speaking and comprehension side. My family watches some Mandarin tv shows and movies, and so I have managed to pick up elementary phrases like 'Hello' and 'Goodbye' and the numbers as well as other important things like 'Beer please' and 'Thank you'. I am however, finding it difficult to jump past that phase into full sentences and actual thought. Any private lessons would require a lot of verbal communication . I am available in the evenings and on the weekends, but preferably at night during the weekdays.

I visit Indonesia frequently and have picked up some basic grammar and vocabulary. However, I am far from fluent and would like to learn from someone who has experience teaching either Indonesian or Malaysian. I would like to correct my pronounciatio n and understand the grammar better. I am aiming to be able to read and understand the newspaper and have intermediate level conversations with people in a casual and work environment (I import goods from Indonesia). I am looking for a teacher who could dedicate 1-3 hours a week with me. I prefer to meet in person but am also open to online lessons, video conferences, etc. The ideal teacher would be personable, patient, and have experience teaching these languages to an English speaker.
