My name is Autumn Reed, and I am a graduate student at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, I am in the process of applying to their Language, Literacy and Culture PhD. The majority of my research focuses on Pakistanis living in the United States and Pakistan. I, however, know very little Urdu and do not understand the writing system at all. Essentially, I need to learn how to read, write, speak and become a culturally competent speaker of Urdu. I am looking to pursue this on a part to full time basis. I am looking for a teacher that not only teaches grammar but also culture because language is a cultural construct.

i am a complete beginner with an uncanny gift for languages if given certain keys.
i have a friend who is pakistani and i would like to learn urdu so i can communicate with her family and with her even though she speaks perfect queen's english.
i need conversationa l, day to day, functional, and perhaps even some poetic urdu and am as dedicated as can be given my insane schedule.
i think initially one hour lesson per week with perhaps a mid-week online/teleph one half hour follow-up would be the most i could fit into my schedule.
i need someone who can give me basic keys with which to begin to string words into phrases. i am an uncanny student of phonetics and can mimic very very well. i need audio and some DVD assistance as well.

I am a beginner at learning Urdu, and I only have a basic background. I'm learning Urdu because when I grow older I wish to use Urdu in my job as a journalist. I am willing to dedicate a lot of time (i.e. as long as it takes). It has been hard for me to find a teacher in my area, and will appreciate any tutor out there willing to teach.
