There are two reasons why I would like to learn proper Urdu. First, I want to improve my professional credentials by passing the Illinois Board of Education Urdu Fluency Exam. This certificate will legally allow me to teach English to Pakistani students. I would also serve as liason to the families in the school community.
On a personal level, I would like to enjoy all the Urdu literature and poetry that my parents have collected through the years. I would like to understand the subtle verse and prose.
In terms of my own language abilities in Urdu, I consider myself at an intermediate level - Verbally. I want to learn the proper grammar structures and the correct use of formal vs. informal language. Most importantly, I need to learn to read and write.
I would like to work with a tutor two or three times a week. I would like my lessons to be structured and organized. I am available for lessons between the hours of 5pm and 9pm Central Standard time. I have a web-cam and can scan & e-mail assignments.

I am interested in both my daughter and I learning Urdu. She will be 3 in June. I also have a 1yr old boy that I would like to eventually incorporate into the learning plan. We would be beginners, although my daughter know some Urdu words and understands a little more than she says. My husband is from Pakistan and his family speaks Urdu most of the time. I think it is important for my children to speak the language and to learn myself. Although my husband does speak to us in Urdu, I believe as the mother I am ultimately going to be the one that makes it happen or not. At this time we would be most interested in learning to speak and listen. We are 3 hours west of Chicago. It would be possible for us to come to Chicago/Des Moines, etc. once a month and then perhaps do follow up lessons via phone once a week. Or as recommended and agreed upon by both the me and the instructor. The qualities I would be looking for in a teacher is patience and the ability to make it fun for my daughter to learn.
