I would like to learn Romanian starting at the beginner level. I don't know much at all thoughI have started by looking on the Web.
My reasons are personal; I met a Romanian with whom I wish to maintain a relationship.
I work full time so my study would be in the evenings at home with lessons every week. Though I am more interested in conversationa l Romanian I want to understand the why as well so I am willing to spend time on the grammar. In fact I downloaded a grammar book in English and have read through it, and have purchased an computer program.
I would like a teacher who is demanding, ready to answer questions, and can provide an environment that is Romanian.

I only know about 10 words in Romanian, so I am most definately a beginner. I am desperate to learn how to speak Romanian, because I am about to marry a man from Romania. I would really love to learn the language, so that I can communicate with his parents and his friends. We are planning a trip to Romania in October, to celebrate our marriage with his side of the family. I really want to be able to converse with everyone, and take part in the festivities, but I feel that I'll need to know the language in order to do that. I am willing to spend as much time as it takes to learn the language, and can spend at least 2 hours or more a day on language lessons. The qualitites that I'm looking for in a teacher are patience, reliability, and a structured way of explaining things.

I have no knowledge of the Romanian language whatsoever although I have a natural talent for language, including my native tongue, American. I was able to learn German fluently so well that I 'passed' as German. I still can after spending a few days there -- my brain seems to have stored my ability to pronounce without accent along with the ability to construct (mostly!) perfect sentences.
I'm interested in flexing my language muscles again, and while I was at first interested in French (because of the beautiful sound), I am interested in learning Romanian because I may be traveling there at some point this year or early next year, mostly to learn about the country and see historical sites. I'm also intensely interested in national cultures, and Eastern European countries are foreign to me (I've spent a majority of my time in Germany when I go to Europe). I have no knowledge or experience in Romania, the Czech Republic, Poland, and so on. I think I would like to broaden my horizons now (I'm 38 years old).
My approach to learning is formal. I require very structured grammar lessons (particular from a good text book) along with tapes, tests, and direct interaction with a proficient instructor. While I do realize you live in Michigan, that is where I am from, and I am frequently there. Additionally, telephone conversations are also a possibility or internet chat/voice sessions (I have a voice-over-IP telephone).
I would require assignments, due dates for homework, etc. I come from a very formal learning/educ ational environment and I find that is how I learn best. I am not interested in 'conversation al' Romanian other than as a byproduct of learning the language well.
