  • Description

I have been working in Laos on and off for about 10 years as a researcher. I lived in Laos one year in 2003-2004 and took some lessons with my Lao colleague (i.e. not a trained teacher). I started to read and write a little bit. My level of conversation is basic: I can talk about everyday life in general. I do also have an understanding of conversation within my professional field, as I have been involved in a lot of interaction and interviewing with local people in my work (together with my Lao colleague who did the translations) . However, I haven't ben back in Laos since 2006 so I have forgotten some of my Lao. Now I'm about to start a new research project in Laos and want to improve my language skills for that. I'll be based in Brisbane and do fieldwork in Laos during 2012 and 2013 (a few shorter stays). My idea is that while in Brisbane, I want to take Lao lessons quite intense, to be able to gain as much as possible during my fieldwork sessions in Laos. I need to improve reading and writing as I believe that's the only way to go to learn the language properly. Conversation will then be easier to just take up, I guess. I want to study intense in the beginning. Three occasions per week would be the best as I have other obligations too at the uni. My dream teacher is structured, and also able to explain and offer the right 'feeling' for the Lao language.
