Hi Santi,
Mandarin and Cantonese is very different from speaking(the tone). I think speaking Cantonese is like singing. I am madarin and cantonese speaker. Other Chinese languages is different from Manderin also, the big different is the tone.Chinese have 4 tones in total. For the beginers, i think to learn the tone is very important.And then learn the basic Chinese,learn the character,pronun ciation,simple sentence...... I am glad to help you.
