Re:Anyone studied Chinese in Beijing?
I spent 2+ years in China. Beijing is NOT the best place to learn Mandarin. Because: 1.Too many foreigners 2.Too many English speaking Chinese 3.Most classes are very large 4. The Beijing accent is not as standard as they would have you beilieve
If you are comfortable with living a more austere life style in a very cold place, I would go to Harbin. The accent there is generally near perfect. There aren’t many foreigners. There are still a lot of English speakers, but not so many as to hamper your learning experience.

Excellent suggestion, Clay! Besides, Harbin is cool in summer.

Re:Anyone studied Chinese in Beijing?
i think it depends on the language school that you plan to go to. i heard that beijing language university is not bad for short term courses. alternatively, you might wanna try out beijing university (however, i don't know whether do they provide short term language courses).
if you don't mind going elsewhere, then perhaps you might wanna consider qingdao (my friend who went there for short term chinese course said that the living environment there is quite good).
