What is 'du'?
I'm Japanese. I've just begun learning French by myself. I found the following sentence in the textbook. J'habite dans la departement du Rhone. I'm wondering if 'du' is correct here. Shouldn't it be 'de' like in 'la ville de Rennes?' If 'du' is correct, could someone explain it for me? I'd appreciate your help.

Re:What is 'du'?
You may want to get another book if that's really what it said... and not because the "du".
Your sentence: J'habite dans la departement du Rhone.
The correct one: J'habite dans le département du Rhône.
Du is a contraction of de+le. You don't say "Rhône" but "le Rhône", so you use "du" in this case.
Hope it helped. Cantarella

Re:Re:What is 'du'?
Hello, Cantarella. This is Monami. Thank you very much for your help. As for the spelling mistakes, it's not the fault of the textbook. My computer keyboard does not have keys for accent aigu, accent grave, or accent circonflex. So I used letters without them. Thanks any way. I really appreciate your help.

Konnichiwa, Monomi-san! Sorry about the accents *blush*. Then the le/la I suppose that it was a typo(?). At first partitives are a pain, but you get used to it.=) I'm glad you found it useful. Ja matta!

Hello, Cantallera. Thank you very much for your kind reply. I didn't notice I had miscopied the article until you pointed it out. It was my error. I'm sorry I was so careless. And thank you very much again. Merci beaucoup. Domo arigatogozaimasu.
