Re:I would like to know more about Indian and Nepalese cultures
Hi Jo,
India is a veritable trasure mine of all aspects of humanity. There is no country in the world with such vast diversities in its culture, religion, sociology and languages. China, may, very likely, come quite close.
India is essentially a religious country. 85% of the population follows Hindu religion-is just a name for conglomerate of different religious beliefs ranging from atheism to diety worship in its myriad forms- divided into countless sects and subsects. About 11% are Muslims and the rest 4%. Other religions include: Parsi, Shikh, and Christian.Religious teachings vary from total non-violence-even to the extent of not killing the smallest creatures as ants and other living beings including insects, birds and animals to the complete annihilation of the enemy in the actively persued warfare- with different degrees of violence and non-violence sprinkled in between. I remeber having seen on Discovery TV Channel a programme giving a wide spectrum of the religions of India.
Languages-Important official languages have been enumerated in the (there have been subsequent additions to this number) in the Constitution of the country which is the basic law. Hindi/Urdu is the main language and enjoys a status comparable to the status of Mandarin in China. In South, as in China's South, there is a greater diversity-Tamil, Telgu, Malyalam and Kannad are the main languages of the Southern part. Panajbi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Assamese and Oriya are the other main languages. Besides these there are a host of other local languages. Except Tamil all other are Indic languages descended from the original Sanskrit and share the same alphabet-with variation in written script. Hindi and MArathi share the same wrtitten script. Sindhi, Panjabi, Gujarati and MArathi are spoken in Western parts and Bengali, Assamese and Oriya in the Eastern part.
Social customs and family living also display similar diversities. On the one extreme there are celibate monks staying in monastries and the regular households where the marriage practices vary from Monagamy to Polygamy to Polyandry. There are large joint families where parents and sons-two or three generations- share commaonality of food, shelter and worship as also neuclear ones consisting of only husband wife and children.
You can find several web sites on internet giving a pictursque presentation of India in its various aspects. In case yoy need to know about these please do respond.
Recently I read a book on the Languages of China and was quite fascinated to know about the varities of languages. I would love to learn Mandarin but am afraid it may be too hard for me. Please give some information about your country, China.
