I found le petit nicolas helpful. It's a book for children so it's quite simple and interesting.

I give you a piece of advice: les lettres de mon moulin writting by Alphonse Daudet. A nice book about the provence in the 19 century which describe the french people and the landscape of the south of france. This book is easy to read.
