I am participating in a year-long exchange to Austria for the 2009/10 school year. I will be living with an Austrian family and attending an Austrian school. Therefore I would like to have a solid base understanding of the German language to allow me to fully appreciate my exchange. I have never studied German before, and so I am a complete beginner, but I am willing to put a lot of time and effort into this to make myself successful. I hope to learn basic grammar and vocabulary so I will be able to communicate with people when I arrive in Austria.

My German ability is fairly good. Although I didn't learn German growing up I was always exposed to the language as my father was born in Germany. I also lived in Germany for 8 months and have taken German courses at university for 3 years. But I would like to improve my German even more because I will be doing my PhD in Germany this fall. I want to become more comfortable speaking and improve my grammar and technical/sci entific vocabulary.
