I want to learn how to understand and speak Egyptian Arabic. I would like to do this to be able to converse and understand my Egyptian relatives. Even though most of them speak and understand English ( British English). I would really like to communicate with them more in Arabic.
I' m mostly interested in everyday conversations , asking them how they are, telling them what I'm doing, etc.
I'd really love to understand more of the Egyptian soap operas and movies too.
I have tried to learn Arabic before ( Standard Modern Arabic) but found it much to difficult and unrelated to any Arabic I've picked up so far. I definitely don't want to learn 'fusha' since I am not planning to listen to any news channels from any Arabic-speaki ng country.
I do have some very basic understanding of common words, nouns and adjectives. However, since I was never taught any basic grammar, I dont feel comfortable trying to form my own sentences. I have picked up a little grammar such as' bay-tick' , and 'ben-tick' for 'your house' and 'your daughter' but would really like to get a general background of basic grammar so I may, in the future, try to ask or answer questions from my relatives.

I have traveled to Brazil for the past 20 years for business. Although I can speak some portuguese, I need to improve my grammar and conversation skills. In the past, I always traveled with someone who could interpret when needed, but I will be traveling alone in the future and need better communication skills.

My ultimate goal is to major in linguistics and then teach English in Japan. If that isn't possible I would like to seek work as a freelance translator. If I had to describe my proficiency level it be with the word 'aka-chan' I know nothing but the basics. I need to improve in every area. I would be willing to put in as much time as needed to be fluent within the next 3 years. As far as an instructor goes...I want someone who is not boring and who really knows the language.
