AKO (I) SUBJECTIVE PRONOUN
AKO AY SI CATHERINE
I am Catherine.
I am Catherine…”am” here is a linking verb
AKO SI CATHERINE.
deleting “ay” here does not affect the idea of the sentence
“SI” is always with a NAME…like “si Rob, si Susan”
The word “AY” = “IS” and “AM” “ARE”
REMEMBER AY= is, are, am as helping verbs or as linking verbs
helping verbs for tenses of the verbs
linking verbs as compliment
She is Rose. Siya ay si Rose.
She is a doctor. Siya ay isang doctor.
You are Rob. Ikaw ay si Rob.
AKO AY ISANG FILIPINO.
I am a Filipino.
“isang” from the root word “isa” means “one”, combine isa and ng becomes isang. It is an indefinite article equivalent to a/an. Only used with singular noun.
SINCE “I” is first person singular, we put the word “isang”
A and AN are indefinite articles like an apple, a teacher which means singular noun. We do not use an indefinite article with plural nouns and uncounted nouns:
NAKATIRA AKO SA__________.
AKO AY NAKATIRA SA _______.
I live in __________.
In tagalog, the word “SA” is equivalent to in, on, and at for time and place.
AKO AY _____ TAONG GULANG.
I am ____years old.
OTHER SUBJECTIVE PRONOUNS
In Tagalog, AKO, IKAW, SI + NAME OR SIYA, TAYO, KAMI, SILA (ANG and ANG MGA) are subjective pronouns: the subject and the doer of the action.
Tagalog sentence starts with Tagalog subjective pronoun and INVERTIBLE.(DELETE AY)
YOU = IKAW (2ND PERSON SINGULAR)
Ikaw ay maganda…You are beautiful.
Ikaw ay isang doktor… You are a doctor.
• IKAW= KA (ay is deleted)
Ikaw ay maganda…You are beautiful.
Maganda ka.
Ikaw ay isang doktor… You are a doctor.
Doktor ka.
Ikaw ay mali.(mali ka).you are wrong.
Ikaw ay pogi.(pogi ka).You are handsome.
• KITA =Use KITA to rename the doer I and direct object YOU
(ikaw and ko)
Mahal ko ikaw.
Ikaw ay mahal ko.INVERTED
I love you.
Mahal kita.
Ikaw ay binigyan ko ng pera. I gave you money.
Binigyan kita ng pera.
SHE/HE= SI+NAME or PRONOUN “SIYA” (3RD PERSON SINGULAR)
In Tagalog, SIYA is either she or he and SI + NAME
SI Angela ay maganda
Siya ay maganda…She is beautiful.
The adjective beautiful is a characteristic of a woman.
(INVERTED: Maganda siya.)
Si Rob ay pogi.
Siya ay pogi…He is handsome.
Again, handsome describes a man.
(INVERTED: Pogi siya.)
WE = KAMI (1st PERSON PLURAL)
Kami ang mga guro…We are the teachers.
Kami ay aalis…We are leaving.
(INVERTED: Aalis kami.)
KAYO = 2ND PERSON PLURAL
Kayo ay pupunta sa Disney land.
You (people) are going to Disneyland.
(INVERTED: Pupunta kayo sa Disneyland.)
THEY = SILA (3RD PERSON PLURAL)
They are the parents of the students
Sila ang mga magulang ng mga estudyante
(INVERTED: Mga magulang sila ng mga estudyante.)
TAYO means all (sila + kami)
Tayo ay mga Pilipino. We are Filipinos.
(INVERTED: Mga Pilipino tayo.)
THE = ANG (SINGULAR) OR ANG MGA (PLURAL)
The Bouquet of flowers (Ang bungkos ng mga bulaklak)
The Garden of Eden (Ang Hardin ng Eden)
The Gift of Love ( Ang Regalo ng Pag-ibig )
The group of people (Ang grupo ng mga tao)
Ang mga bata ay naglalaro. Children are playing.
In Tagalog, pronoun depends on what verb is used in the sentence.
Tagalog has many sentence patterns. It depends on the verb and what voice you are using.(ACTIVE AND PASSIVE).
