    Teaching Approach

I am a native speaker and certified teacher of Russian.
I have a degree in linguistics and translation. My second language is English. I have taught English for seven years to children and adults, in groups and individually.
I have a wealth of life experience and a great sensitivity to human needs. I am LGBTQ+ friendly and disability friendly. I have worked as an assistant for people with disabilities and have been doing self-advocacy in the field of disability justice since 2020. Therefore, in my classes, I take into account the special needs of my students, for example, reading difficulties (dyslexia), or the special interests in autistic people.

    Program Description

I invite motivated students to my Russian and English classes who know exactly what they want to learn the language for. My individual lessons are held in an interactive format, so that attention is paid to all four types of communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. In the case of special wishes of the student, preference is given to one aspect, for example, reading or speaking.
At the beginning of each lesson, we set a goal, and at the end we sum up the results. I give my students feedback so that they could evaluate their progress.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    FAQ

How should we address the teacher?

M y name is Dzherri (Jerry) and people use pronouns he/him when talking about me in English, and grammatical forms of the masculine gender when talking about me in Russian.

What happens in the first lesson, and why is it free?

The first session is introductory, where we get to know each other and set the goals for the paid collaboration in the near future. Thus, the first session is free.
During the first session we talk and find out why you need to learn the language, and how long the whole course will last. If you already have some skills in the language you want to learn, the first session will also include a short interview test that assesses the level of speaking and listening skills. A short passage of text is also given to assess reading skills, and writing skills are tested with a small written task where you need to answer a question or two in writing.
You will have an opportunity to talk about yourself and your interests - so that we could include materials on such topics in our classes.
Als o, during our first meeting, we once again negotiate the terms of payment, and agree on the first paid lesson.

What do we need to find out before the first free session?

P rior to the first session, you need to clearly define the purpose of language learning. So many people start learning a language "for themselves", or as a leisure activity, not realizing that learning a language requires an investment of time and mental resources in addition to financial ones. These students most often drop out after the first two or three lessons because their goal was not clear enough and their motivation was not strong enough. And the same applies to school-age students who do not have their own motivation, and they study the language only because their parents require it. As a rule, this approach leads to disappointmen t on the part of the student. To avoid this, you need to set clear goals before the first session and calculate your resources - both financial, and temporal and mental.

At what point should the lesson be paid for, and what if the lesson has to be canceled?

Lessons are paid for no later than 24 hours in advance. From now on, if a student cancels the lesson, the money will not be returned. If I am forced to cancel a lesson, then I compensate for it by giving you one additional lesson for free.

Is there a refund if the Internet connection fails during the lesson?
If the online connection fails, the money will not be returned to the student, but the lesson will be compensated for by the additional assignments that I will send to the student.

Is there time to reconnect to zoom between 30-minute zoom sessions?

Because I use free zoom, it may turn off after 30 minutes, and it will take some time to reconnect before entering the conference again. In order to compensate for this, I add five minutes to a 60-minute lesson, but no more.

What online platforms can be used besides zoom?

In addition to zoom, I use video connection on Facebook messenger and, and in rare cases, WhatsApp.

How many classes per week is it desirable to have?

There should be at least two sessions of 60 minutes per week. I recommend a maximum of four classes per week, because you need to have time to relax and switch to other things. Studying too intensely can lead to fatigue, burnout, and loss of interest. There needs to be a balance.

Do we have to do homework?

Yes, homework is an integral part of the learning process. In order to learn a language, you need to study not only with a teacher, but also on your own. However, if you warn in the first free lesson that you will not be able to do homework for personal reasons, we will agree to increase the number of our classes per week in order to compensate for the lack of homework. In this case, classes should be held at least three times a week.
