    Teaching Approach

    Instructional Methodology

I have a keen interest in language teaching methodology and curriculum design and management. My primary pedagogical objective as an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructor in Japan was to have students produce naturally sounding speech using two-way, real-time communication ; that is, to have learners actually take part in conversations and activities in the target language. My EFL instructional approach consists of a mixture of adapted components and principles stemming primarily from Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)/Task-ba sed language teaching (TBLT), the direct method, and the Immediate Method (IM). I later began to apply principles of the Immediate Method to my instruction and curricular approach and it proved highly effective specifically with large groups of pupils. The IM’s conversationa l classroom management technique was especially practical in terms of overcoming classroom challenges, such as large classes and typical low levels of language ability and motivation. By alternating between or mixing components drawn from the Direct and Immediate methods and the Communicative and Lexical approaches often within a Cooperative or Collaborative learning framework, I found success instructing individuals and small groups effectively, and in managing and motivating larger groups of learners.

    Program Description

    Overseas Experience (Japan)

I taught English as a Foreign Language in Japan, from June of 2001 to April 2010. I instructed a variety of learners over 23 months (about 2800 hours of class instruction) at English Circles Inc., (Sapporo) and approximately 4450 hours of instruction over 58 months at Berlitz Japan Inc., (Sapporo and Tokyo, respectively) . I also delivered corporate lessons at: Benesse Corporation (Headquarters , Tokyo); Isuzu Motors (Kanagawa); Sapporo High Court (Sapporo); and Toyota Motors (Shibetsu, Winter Training Grounds). Further, I was employed as Instructional Designer and Head Instructor at Asahi Culture Centre (Sapporo) for an 18-month period before transferring via Berlitz (then, my principal employer) to Tokyo in September 2005. In April 2008, I accepted a position at Tamagawa Academy (senior high school) as full-time EFL instructor/co nsultant in the Center for K-12 International Exchange. The position involved several roles including instructor of EFL Aural/Oral Communication , Core English, and special-focus courses in “Writing” and “Listening” for university entrance exam success and overseas transition. Other responsibilit ies mainly included free-studies leader, curriculum designer, term exam reviser/score r, and proof-reader. During my second year at Tamagawa, I also delivered evening classes at Machida Citizens Forum (Tokyo) facilitating senior learners with EFL and Western culture/etiqu ette.

    Domestic Experience (Canada)

A t Solomon College (Edmonton, Alberta), I was employed as full-time ESL instructor Monday through Friday, and as ‘Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada’ (LINC) instructor on weekends. This job spanned from January 2011 to June 2012. Both the ESL and LINC classes were composed of Permanent Resident (PR) status students, that is, recently settled or ‘newcomers’ to Canada. The ESL program was funded by the Provincial Government while the LINC program was federally funded through Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). During this contract, I was selected to represent the school as lead teacher for the CIC funded ‘Portfolio Based Language Assessment’ (PBLA) pilot project. This program combines Task-based instruction (TBI) with Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) aligned assessment tools; learning portfolios constructed by students are evaluated/ass essed according to CLB criteria. Further, I served as practicum sponsor at Solomon College from July 2011 through February 2012 supervising seven college students over an eight-month period as part of their TESOL diploma program. During this time, and for this purpose, Canada TESL qualified me to teach courses accredited under their Federation, Canada wide.
