Teaching Approach

I believe that starting off in a new language flashcards and pictures are very important seeing as these learners have no idea of what the words mean. When my learners get the basics then I start with reading and sentences. They should also learn the alphabet and sounds very early on to help then with pronouncing the words correctly. In class or during class time speak with them in the language or show pictures when you want then to understand you easier. With time the pictures are less and words more. During the English lessons I use big books and let learners tell me what they see in the pictures and them I tell them the story, with that they learn how to communicate in the language as well as learn to use their own imagination. I have many checklists and tests I do with learners to see on what level they are and where they need more help. I also put in extra time and effort with learners that struggle.

Program Description

I am a current teacher who teaches English to Xhosa and Sotho learners from Gr. R to Gr.3. These learners cannot speak any English and I start from scratch by using everyday words with flashcards and pictures so that they can associate the word with a picture. I speak with them English the whole time and correct them when they pronounce or can't say the sentence in the correct manor. I am familiar with CAPS and will be doing my TEFl course soon as well. I work on many worksheets with pictures and Big Books to help the learner to learn how to read and write I also have check sheets and tests I do with the learners to help them remember what they learn and also tests to help us see how they do and how far and what level they have reached. I can do English and Afrikaans Languages seeing as I grew up with both languages and did both First Language at school and in my studies I have taken further languages subjects to help struggling learners.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my teaching mode?
I use the email frequently because the learner and I can go back on it to make sure of something if there is uncertainty about something. I am also more than willing to Skype if the learner is struggling and would rather talk to me in person. I will work between an hour and two hours a day with the learners as per usual lesson in school. I also work on a timetable which I will work out and send to the learners.

What is my payment policy?
I work on a per lesson policy for the beginning to make sure the learner is serious about his or her studies after that, we can make arrangements that suites us both if needed.

Wh at other relevant experience makes me a more effective teacher?
I believe in technology as well as in the older method and have worked with both methods. So I can help learners either way and I have also worked with learners with ADHD, ADD and Autistic learners so I am always up for a challenge as long as I can help the learners.
