In my classes, I apply real-life situations in the professional world accompanied with a strong emphasis in academic knowledge. I want to connect language and cultural content concepts to students’ life experiences in order to maintain their interest in the subject. Students are much more likely to engage in a subject if they believe the topic is important to them.
I believe that as a teacher, it is my duty to challenge and support students according to their individual strengths and needs. I pre-assess students daily to determine the strategies more suitable to their needs and adapt lessons accordingly. I provide varied opportunities for students to communicate and use their knowledge, combining what they already know with what I am introducing to them for the first time.
Learning in my classes occurs within cooperative and collaborative group work. I have found this strategy completely effective and positive to reaffirm and develop strong student-to-st udent and instructor-to -students relationships . By establishing an honest and sincere communication in my lessons, I have also been able to create a positive and enjoyable environment for my students, which motivates them to participate actively in activities.
The affective, psychomotor and cognitive activities allow students to interact with their classmates and practice their reading, speaking, writing and listening Portuguese language skills. I often move seats around so dialogue and eye contact are easier. I also monitor their attention with lots of reinforcement activities; calculate the time-on-task and use a variety of assessments.
One of the most important aspects of my philosophy is sharing the cultural aspect of the language with my students. I am always delighted to share my customs, my traditions and my culture, so that in every lesson I introduce videos, songs, pictures of cultural aspects of the countries that speak Portuguese as their mother tongue.
It is important for me to set high standards for my students and, as an instructor, this starts with being well prepared for every class. The strategies and methodologies I implement in my class are a result of my reflective teaching and interest in life-long learning.

Program Description

First of all, I need to know the level, aims and age of my students so that I can plan pedagogical units that will meet the class' needs. I prepare my own material/reso urces and use textbooks such as "Português XXI", "Na Onda do Português" and "Comunicar em Português" to support my classes with useful activities. I usually introduce realia, like magazines, newspapers, videos, songs, documentaries ... to bring authenticity to reading, writing, listening and speaking activities, because if students are engaged in real-life problems, scenarios and challenges, they will find relevance in the work and become engaged in learning contents. My classes are always supported by teaching software systems, as interactive boards or blackboards as well as internet platforms to promote an interactive and dynamic learning.

Teaching Experience

My background includes teaching English in state primary schools in Barcelos, Maia and Oporto, in Portugal. I have also taught English and Portuguese to young students at "Schoolhouse, ltd" and "The English Centre", that are reputable schools of languages in Oporto area. I also have a strong experience teaching adults through private agencies, such as: "Goldcoaching , lda", "Formaconde, lda", "Clínica S. Cosme de Gondomar, SA" and "ACICE".
In England, I could enrich my career teaching Portuguese for adults at "Warwickshire College", in Leamington Spa and at "the ELP Language Department of University of Westminster" in London, where I have improved my competences of teaching multicultural classes. I am also a tutor of Portuguese for "Cactus Language Worldwide" and for "Talk Talk, learning Services", where I have been tutoring Portuguese to children, students and young professionals .
As a result of six years of teaching experience, I have become proficient in developing comprehensive lesson plans, creating stimulating thematic units, integrating multicultural teaching methodologies and assessing individuals and the class as a whole.

I have a bachelor Degree in Education - Portuguese and English Teaching from the University of Education of Polytechnic Institute of Oporto, Portugal, concluded in 2009. During my high studies, I have done teaching practice at Secondary School 2/3 of Madalena, Vila Nova de Gaia, in Portugal.
After concluding my bachelor degree, I attended a professional course in teaching of Institute of Employment and Vocational Training from which I obtained the Vocational Aptitude Certification .
Since I have finished my degree I have attended various training courses in Portuguese and English for primary, secondary or adult education such as: "Primary English teaching - Creative methodologies and resources", "The Play Way - Drama Ativities for English Teaching", "Eu "Sabo" - Learning Grammar in Portuguese and having fun"; "Portuguese Learning - Teaching beginners and higher without using English".
In England, my qualification s were recognised by National College of Teaching and Leadershing and I obtained a Qualified Teacher Status that means I am qualified to teach in England.
