ASL will come to life as a beautiful visual form of expressive communication and witness. These classes are intended to help you understand the background, culture and communication styles of the deaf and hard of hearing. There will be various resources available that further explain in-depth various aspects of the deaf culture as well as language usage

Program Description

ASL I 4:30-6:00- A class that teaches the understanding of the manual language and its history & culture. ASL has been documented as an incredible way to increase eye to hand coordination; language development; visual comprehension ; and cognitive thinking skills. Certificates will be awarded at the conclusion of the workshop. Additional classes and workshops are offered for any participant who wishes to learn more. This class is open to all home-schooler s and any other interested youth of all ages. This class is accredited as a foreign language class and provides efficient practice at a level that would provide knowledge and comprehension for Advanced Placement or Credit by Exam at the High School level. Cost: $45pp
ASL II 6:00-7:30-A class that teaches the understanding of the manual language and its history & culture in a way that gives a clear understanding of morphemes, use of space, glossing, and conceptual delivery. Basic to Advance Signs; Facial and Body Language; Interpreting vs. Transliterati ng; Ethics; and Signing Communication are taught in a unique and visual manner through the interpretatio n of the poetic message of songs. ASL has been documented as an incredible way to increase eye to hand coordination; language development; visual comprehension ; and cognitive thinking skills. At this level, ASL will come to life as a beautiful visual form of expressive communication and witness. This class is accredited as a foreign language class and provides efficient practice at a level that would provide knowledge and comprehension for Advanced Placement or Credit by Exam. Certificates of Completion and transcript will be awarded at the conclusion of the workshop. Additional classes and workshops are offered for any participant who wishes to learn more. Cost: $45pp
ASL III 7:30-8:30-A class that teaches the understanding of the manual language and its history & culture in a way that gives a clear understanding of it as a Language. Most deaf and hard of hearing individuals are happy to explain their preferred communication style as well as their unique backgrounds. The deaf culture is ethnocentric in nature, centered around sign language and relationships among one another. Unlike other cultures, the Deaf culture is not associated with any native land but, rather it is a global culture. Although by some, deafness maybe viewed as a disability, the Deaf-World sees itself as a language minority. Throughout the years, many accomplishmen ts have been achieved by deaf people. To name the most famous, Ludwig van Beethoven and Thomas Alva Edison were both deaf and contributed great works to culture.
A t this level, ASL will come to life as a beautiful visual form of communication with vast historical and cultural significance. Additional classes and workshops are offered for any participant who wishes to learn more.

I am fluent and teach all levels of ASL. I use the language with family, friends and clients in my coaching and therapy practice. I was adjunct for Deaf Christian University and President of United Methodist Congress for the Deaf Southeast Region from 1999 to 2005. I currently am the Deaf Ministry Lay Leader and ASL interpreter for First Methodist Houston Downtown and have been appointed to the Deaf Advisory Council for the Department of Disabilities in the Houston Mayor's office.

Tut oring payments are made in session groups starting with 6 for $300.00.

Cost of Lessons
|
|
|
Class tuition is $45 for the duration of the class. For example, current classes are scheduled once a week, for 12 weeks. Tutoring is $50 an hour 1/2 one-on-one. Workshops in any location; for groups of 10 or more are $75 per person fora minimum of 5 hours and a maximum of 8.
