Teaching Approach

In many ways, mastering Latin is different from mastering a spoken foreign language. In both cases, mastering the fundamentals of grammar and vocabulary is essential. Latin grammar can come off as more complicated than grammars of other languages, but my explanations and examples are designed to make it clear and easy to understand.

What makes my lessons unique is that I tailor them to individual student's needs and goals. I have been trained as a teacher and have experience designing lesson plans, but I rarely design lessons more than two or three in advance, because I believe it is essential for a lesson to meet a student exactly where he or she is.

Program Description

I tutor individual Latin lessons that are tailored to meet student's specific needs. I've helped many students improve their Latin grades and their understanding of Latin. I am exceptionally skilled at teaching the principles of grammar, and providing expert guidance for students seeking to improve their vocabulary and translation skills.

Teaching Experience

I have been doing one-on-one tutoring in a variety of subjects for over 10 years. I have been tutoring specifically in Latin since 2004. I have two years' experience of language teaching in a classroom. I was awarded a Fulbright fellowship to teach in Germany during the 2006-2007 school year.

Teacher Training

I hold a BA in Classical Languages and Literatures (Latin and Ancient Greek) from Smith College. I am certified to teach English as a Second Language and have received teacher training related to this.

Frequently Asked Questions

- My schedule is very flexible. Normally I am available any time between 8am and 10pm CST, although I take a regular hour-long break for lunch and dinner.
- I accept credit card payments through Google checkout, and I send an invoice every two weeks for the lessons that have been completed since the last invoice.
- Lessons can be bought in advance as well. Students who pay at least $50 an hour and wish to buy 10 or more lessons in advance receive a 10% discount.
- Lessons that are canceled less than 24 hours in advance are charged at half the rate I would normally have earned for them. (So, if you need to cancel tell me at least a day in advance so I don't charge you!)
- I offer a free hour-long introductory lesson for anyone who would like to try it out!
- I have a referral program through which current students can earn a free lesson for every person they refer who takes at least three lessons.

Cost of Lessons

I have a sliding scale from $30 to $80 an hour, depending on student need. Scholarships are also available for motivated students who lack funding. Normally I teach 90 minute lesson, but this can be adjusted depending on the student.
