I am capable of holding a few short and simple conversations . What I need is lots of vocabulary and sentence structures. I also very much want to learn to read and write Chinese characters. I can recognize maybe 100 basic characters, but I have never practiced writing so I can't write them very well, if at all. I'm also open to the idea of learning Cantonese someday, but I want to focus on retaining my current knowledge of Mandarin and increasing it. I would prefer one-on-one tutoring as I learn at my own pace. I usually ask a lot of questions based on what I want to know how to say, so I hope that any time-based curriculum is loose and open. I currently do not have a set schedule, so I would like to schedule a common time to meet with a teacher to see if we are right for each other. I am very eager to hear from native speaking teachers of Mandarin living in Philadelphia.

My proficiency level is beginner, and I would like to learn Mandarin for personal satisfaction. I've never taken a class in Mandarin; therefore, I will need to be introduced to the fundamentals. We would like our family to learn Chinese. We would consider lessons in our area (South Shore - we could possibly get another famly or two to join us) or a live-in situation. We have two children who want to learn. One is 5 yrs old and the other is 3 years old. Our 3 year old (will be 4 in Nov) is Chinese. He moved here from Chaohu in the Anhui province about 1 1/2 years ago. He does understand Mandarin and says a few words of it now and then.
