My husband and I are both interested in beginning Mandarin lessons simply for enjoyment. We are beginners -- neither of us have had any experience in Asian languages, although we are both bilingual in Spanish and English (I'm a native English speaker, he is native Spanish.) We aren't sure how much time we will be able to dedicate to the lessons, but we're thinking it would be one hour a month at the very least, depending on price and our work schedules.
We are looking for a competent teacher (someone familiar with language teaching strategies) and a native speaker. As a language teacher myself, I especially am looking for a teacher that is flexible and can move at my pace (be it slow or fast) and moreover be able to explain the 'hows and whys' of the language...I' m very interested in grammar and patterns.
You will find us to be two very motivated students!

I am a complete beginner with mandarin.I have acquired some software and learning aids but would be much more comfortable with one to one tuition and a structured learning model.I wish to learn this language purely for pleasure and as a travel aid.I have a good friend ( in Japan at the moment )who is Chinese and speaks fluent Mandarin/Engl ish and Japanese.It would be great for me to converse with her in her native tongue.I have 2 different days off work each week so my lesson times need to adapt to this.We can have sessions in my flat,in a public place or anywhere that suits you.My ultimate goal is to speak Mandarin fluently and with confidence.

Took one semester at Georgetown University, learned 500 characters. I have forgotten some but I can learn again quickly. I knew enough that I could probably get around the first week in Beijing, although I never traveled there to try. I want to learn Mandarin because I find Chinese culture extremely fascinating and I'd like to live there or at least travel there in the future. I have trouble memorizing characters, and all the characters I learned were Taiwan characters, so I need to learn mainland characters. I can dedicate a few hours a week, although maybe not every single day. Just looking for someone kind and patient (but I'm a good student). I learn characters slowly but conversation very quickly.
