Dear Sir/Madam,
F irst a little information about me. I am a Keralite who has spent very little time in that state. I was born in the Middle East and educated in different places like Kuwait, Tamilnadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh. However i spent more than 15 years of my working life in Mumbai.
Over the years, i had not bothered to learn the local languages as I am proficient in English, have a passable command over Hindi and speak my parents native language, which is Malayalam. Since English and Hindi are the National Languages, I took it for granted that I could travel anywhere in India without problems. I never had problems in Mumbai or the main cities of Kerala.
Howe ver I have recently come to Bangalore and will be here for atleast a year. Therefore I have the inclination to learn Kannada ( Spoken & Written)as a beginner. My need is that i can read the boards of buses, buildings, notices and other general things as well as argue with the unruly auto/taxi drivers and also bargain with shopkeepers who ask for too much. This is my basic requirement. Later maybe I can enjoy a few films or theatre, or even read some literature. My timings are quite flexible now as I am working freelance assignments. At a later date i may take up a full time job, so I may only be able to study on weekends.
