I want to learn Bengali in Kolkata for two months in January / February 2010.
I have many friends in the city with whom I speak English but I feel to gain a wider experience I should learn Bengali. I would also like to be able to read Bengali literature - I realise that this may be a long term ambition!
I am a beginner with a tiny amount of vocabulary - colours, vegetables etc. I am familiar with the Bengali alphabet and I am keen to avoid transliterati on as far as possible.
I would like to study 2 hours five days per week for a couple of weeks and then review the situation. I want to be able to have basic conversations and perform everyday tasks in Bengali.
M y teacher needs to patient! I am a very visual learner and from past experience I know I need diverse teaching methods to consolidate my understanding . I need a creative, imaginative teacher - I know that I will not learn through a series of dry grammar exercises and by rote learning.
