I have tried for years to learn via books and cd's. I started with a work friend from China who would teach me little phases, and words. My friend gave me my first book, and soon left the company we worked for, so I don't have that contact anymore, but I'm hooked on the language and culture of China, and would enjoy learning all that I can. I would say I was a beginner, but I believe conversation with a native speaker would be the best way for me to improve. One day I hope to work abroad, or at least be able to spend quality time enjoying the areas in which mandarin is spoken.
